Hi- I just saw your info on Anna Armstrong, and sisters Leona, or ‘Onie’, and Floss, who became my ‘Aunt Flossie’ when she married Ernest Walker. Onie was the Lowry City telephone operator in the days when every call had to be connected by hand. Yes, she was married to Bryan Sorter secondly….I remember them both. All 3 sisters were very active in the Lowry City Methodist Church.
I wonder if you can help me. I am currently researching a book on an RAF WW2 Squadron and one of the pilots who I am seeking information on is IAN CHEESMAN SWANN. This pilot was killed during the war so I am seeking any living relatives who may be able to provide further information/photographs of him.

I am daughter of Glenn Albert Mattocks, Jr. born July 3, 1927, died of cancer Dec 4, 2009. Dad was veteran of WWII. He had his own excavating/dredging company “Mattocks & Sons Drainage Service”, Walkerton, Indiana–until he retired at 75 yrs old. He started running crane at age 15 yrs old with his father, Glenn Howard (Pat)Mattocks, Fish Lake, Indiana. Grandpa “Pat” Mattocks died in car accident in 1959, he was hit by semi truck in Knox(Toto), Indiana. He was married to my grandmother, Della Daisy Rowan (Wheatfield, IN).
Their children: Myrtle [...] – still living. My Dad Glenn Jr., then Beverly Eugene Mattocks who died July 2, 2008 in Spring Hill, Fla., Robert Mattocks died Feb 1, 2009 in Frostproof, Fla, Sonja [...].
Grandpa “Pat” Mattocks and my father Glenn Jr–listed as Mattocks Drainage Company in state records for crane dredging of Kankakee Marsh areas of St Joseph, Marshall, Starke Counties.
I have two brothers: my older brother-Thomas Lee Mattocks born [...], one daughter [...]; my younger brother Steven A Mattocks born [...], one daughter [...]. I married [...], divorced [...] we have one son, [...].
Uncle Gene Mattocks–(Beverly Eugene) Mattocks, has three sons, Gene Jr, John and Larry Mattocks all of [...] and two daughters [...] married and [...] married, both of [...]. Uncle Gene was a prisoner in Korean War.He married Shirley (Teener) and lived in Fish Lake, IN until early 1970’s then moved to Florida with their five children.
Uncle Bob (Robert) Mattocks married to Aunt Jeanette and had six children I think(one died at birth); one son [...] and five daughters [...]. Uncle Bob retired with his second wife, Elsie, to Florida. Uncle Bob had a dump truck bed come down on him as he accidently hit lever, it smashed him when he was about sixteen. My Dad said the only thing that must have saved him was that he was so skinny! Grandpa was there working with crane filling dump truck and Uncle Bob would take dirt and dump it where wanted. Uncle Bob never had any internal problems from the accident.
I remember my Great Aunt Maude (Mattocks) Hires (Grandpa Glenn Howard Mattocks sister) who lived at Koontz Lake (Walkerton address) Indiana. She had a blue rinse put on her silver grey hair. It was very amazing to a young little girl to see bluish hair! I remember her fifth and last husband, Uncle Alvie.
My parents bought their house [...] in 1952 and lived there all their lives. My Mother is still living there, she is [...] yrs old. My parents were married [...] yrs when Dad died 12/04/2008.
Interesting info on your site for Mattocks family. I was told we were German, Native American? Do you know of any Mattock printed geneology books? My mother’s family (Gardner) have one with recipes, pictures, etc.–very informative to us “youngsters” ha ha.

I am sorry to hear of your father’s recent passing. That, combined with the recent deaths of two of his brothers, must contribute to a time of sadness and recollection for those of you remaining behind. Thank you for bringing the news of these deaths to my attention.
For other readers, I will be so bold as to point out that there is an error in the date of death as originally given in your comment (should be 2008, not 2009), which you correctly recorded later on.
It seems that many in the Mattocks family have found careers in excavating and dredging. Apparently this career choice stems from the family’s history on the Kankakee and Wabash rivers, two waterways that have a long history of being dredged to provide passage for boats. In addition, I have read that a large area of Newton County, Indiana, had formerly been marshland, and was drained to provide fertile farmland. The Mattocks family would have been present in this region during the time the marshes were drained and may well have participated in this transformation.
While it appears to me that our Mattocks ancestors originally came to America from England (and might trace their roots ultimately to Wales), there is certainly a branch of our ancestry that has strong German roots. Our ancestor Cyrus Rumsey Mattocks married Hester Ann Hess, whose bloodline was richly German (Palatine). I have found no evidence of Native American heritage and think it is probably unlikely though certainly not impossible.
I do not believe there are any printed Mattocks genealogy books (though the occasional Mattocks relative appears in genealogy books on other families).
I hope you have checked out my site The Cooperage, where I have shared some of my findings on the Mattocks family, as well as other family lines from which I am descended. I have also just launched An inheritance of ghosts, where eventually I hope to expand on the stories of my ancestors.
Thank you again for sharing your memories, Cheryl. I hope you will feel welcome to share more family stories here as time permits.
